Aloha Lions Ohana,

We hope this message finds you all well.  Again I have to write to you with significant changes.  With the uncertainty in the community, today due to the rapid rise in COVID-19 the Principals of Farrington Complex have decided that, out of an abundance of caution, we will not be starting our school year in the way we had told you previously.  Instead, we will do the following.

  • Starting Monday we will invite parents and students to pick up the opening day packet, some supplies, and equipment from their teachers, and, if needed, a computer for accessing the online curriculum.
  • We ask parents to come to the cafeteria from 10 am - 1 pm on a day corresponding with their last name.
    • Monday A-F
    • Tuesday G-M
    • Wednesday N-S
    • Thursday T-Z
  • Hard copy instructions for logging on to the online classroom will be provided.
  • I will be hosting online video meetings next week.  Exact times and web addresses will be announced soon.
  • Some teachers will be inviting select students for individual training sessions based on need.
  • Please note that upon entering our cafeteria you will be screened by our health aid.
  • Special Education Students who are scheduled to attend daily will be coming to school for services.
  • Students who have a computer and are able to are asked to log onto their google classroom and join their teachers starting Monday morning at 8:00 am.
  • Parents and students can email or call their teachers from 8-10 for assistance.

Our faculty and staff would also like to welcome you and your child this school year, and so please visit this link to see our staff welcome videos: https://flipgrid.com/kalihilions password: Lions123

We know that this sudden change is not going to make everyone happy and we also know that not everyone will feel comfortable with this situation.  I do want to ensure you all that we are working our hardest to meet the needs of all families in the safest manner possible.  Please don't hesitate to let us know if you need help with anything.  We are here to help.

Keep Strong Lions.  Remember.  We are the Lions.  We are the Future!

Mr. Larkin

Aloha Lions Ohana,

I hope this message finds you well in the chaos of this week.  As you all should know by now next week is looking significantly different than what was planned only a few days back.  Each of you should have received some information from your teachers by phone or you will soon by letter listing when your child will be invited to campus for distance learning training.  Some select students with special needs may be attending face-to-face still, but most of your children will be online daily after next week.

While many of you are prepared to support your students with getting online, many of you are not.  We will be offering training for parents next week on campus for those parents who need assistance.  Parents from Kindergarten, 1st grade, and select teachers from other grades will be trained with your child in the classroom. For all others, we will hold open training sessions from 8:15-9:00 am in the cafeteria on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

We HIGHLY recommend all parents join their children on their training day in order to fill out the opening of the school day packet that has a lot of required forms that need to be turned in and to sign out the devices for those students who need to borrow one.

If students or parents want training at the school on their own personal device during the week of August 17-20, they may bring them on campus for training purposes and we can help them with getting to the correct location for their online classes.

We also want to tell you about the ohana help desk https://sites.google.com/k12.hi.us/ohana-help-desk-portal/ which has videos, links, and phone support for families to answer technology help questions.  I highly recommend families who need support check there first to answer whatever questions you may have. You may also call 643-3375

Regarding school supplies: Please hold off on bringing your school supplies to school so your child can use them during distance learning.  Kindergarten students who will be coming in for training next week will be given some supplies back from those they already gave to the teachers.

Our breakfast and lunch service will still be available for students throughout this period and every school day.  All meals will be grab-and-go, just like during summer school.  Any student at Kalihi Waena is welcome to come pick-up food for any meal.  We do still ask that parents do NOT drop off your students before 7:15 am any day and that you all pick them up promptly on their scheduled departure time.

We recognize this is not the best situation for all of us.  If we could we would much rather have your kids with us here on-campus learning, laughing, and building relationships. However, that is not the case.  We will try to accommodate each child and family to the best of our ability, but what we want to do and what we can do maybe two different things right now.  I ask that you be patient with our teachers and staff during this difficult transition while we change our practice and organize it in a whole new way.  It may take some time, but we will all adjust to this new normal.

Keep strong Lions.  Remember.  We are the Lions.  We are the Future!
